This series is simply fun. It's exactly what some of us need when life gets heavy and we need to get away..http://www.blogger.com/profile/05490375813862431803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7691539480466193674.post-52854307101534818672014-05-04T05:25:00.001-07:002014-05-04T05:25:26.094-07:00The Amazing Spiderman 2I went to see the Amazing Spiderman 2 with my son last night. He thought it was the best movie ever, but I'm not sure how I feel about it. There were a lot of story lines in the movie and they all felt rushed. Don't get me wrong, it had some great moments, but overall it was a blur of plot connecting dots that felt like some were placed after they watched the movie for the first time. It was like someone realized and thought "that doesn't make sense. We'd better put in a quick explanation."

I don't regret going. No way. A not so great Marvel movie with my son is still more fun than just about anything else I can think of. Still, I'm wishing we would've gone to see Captain America instead.
Around two years ago, my son and I began reading the Harry Potter series. This may not seem like a big deal to some people, but my son is special. You see, though we didn't know it then, my son has Asperger's Syndrome and it was very hard for me to connect to him outside of video games. Though I don't mind video games, I can't say they are my "thing". When we started reading Harry Potter together, we suddenly had something in common that developed into a passion. Harry Potter was OUR thing.

Now it's officially over and I find myself very sad. We finished the Harry Potter series today and then watched the last movie tonight. Though it was an AMAZING series, the sadness doesn't come from the story being over. It comes from a fear that we may never capture that magic again. A fear that the two of us won't connect with something as deeply TOGETHER as we have this series. This has been a large part of our lives for the last two years. We have read each and every word together. It has become the best thing I've ever done with my son. It will be forever one of the greatest memories I will carry and I hope that he carries them as well.

He has already chosen our next series and it is the Spirit Animal series. I know nothing about it, but I don't care if it's the worst thing I've ever read. I'm going to read it to him like it's the last thing I'll ever read.

I love you, son.

How are you all? Things are good here in Kansas. Spring is here (though it's snowing in the northwestern part of the state right now) and we've been working outside cleaning up the place. We live in the country and have TONS of trees and bushes that required some attention. Our burn pile is monstrous! It'll have to wait as we're in a burn ban currently. It's crazy to think how much snow we had this winter yet we're still starving for moisture.

Anyway, enough about that. I have starting writing my next book. It is something that my daughter asked me for last year and I promised that when I finished Axiom Theory that I would write it for her. It is called The Toadstool Princess: The Chronicles of Wyk. It (of course) is a fairy book that is meant for younger readers. Don't worry though, I'll be back to the usual contemporary/sci-fi fantasy action with the third book of The Chosen series right after this one is finished up!

Hope life is treating you all well. Take care and have a great day!.http://www.blogger.com/profile/05490375813862431803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7691539480466193674.post-27804836909078734672014-03-21T05:19:00.003-07:002014-03-21T05:19:59.036-07:00A fabulous first day of spring!I'll tell you what...evenings don't get much better than they did last night.

The weather was a perfect 74 degrees with a gentle breeze. I spent about an hour in the hammock reading and then came inside to have a Pokemon battle with my son. After supper, we went to our Thursday night family hangout. If you're ever in Salina, Kansas, check out the Ad Astra Coffee and Book shop. It is a blast and they make a great cup of coffee! On Thursdays they have a gentleman that plays his guitar and sings about any old tune you can think of. It's quiet and cozy. The best part was that while I was enjoying my mocha, I got to watch my wife and daughter dance. FUN!

Love my family. Love my life.

Take care all. HAPPY SPRING!

I'm hoping to have paperbacks available by the end of March..http://www.blogger.com/profile/05490375813862431803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7691539480466193674.post-33962841695115201182014-02-08T06:20:00.002-08:002014-02-08T06:20:48.908-08:00Coffee, edits, reading, and SNOW!Good morning everyone. Hope you're all staying warm. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I've had enough of winter. The benefit has been that I've gotten more editing and reading in this week than I have in a while!

I've performed two rounds on Axiom Theory this week. There are three to four passes left to go before I'm going to let it go. It will for sure be available this month. I PROMISE!

I'm also going to create an Omnibus in e-book form for the Shadow Series that will include all five books (the four main novels and Cliff's Memoirs). I don't know if that will be formatted and ready by the end of the month, but it should be shortly thereafter.

I'm currently reading J.L. Bryan's Fairy Metal Thunder. It's a great, light read and exactly what I needed. There are times when I want dark and heavy, and times when I just want to have fun. This book is fun.

Well, I'm going to get back to my pecan coffee as I watch some cartoons with my kids. The day will begin for me in about a half hour. Until then, I'm going to relax!

Hope you all have a great weekend. Stay warm, be safe, and make someone smile!
Couple that with the fact that I have tendency to be moody, and those highs and lows can be extreme.

Like any artist, we throw ourselves out in front of millions of people. We put a lot of time into our passion. For example, The Shadow Series has taken up the better part of the last four years of my life. To say that these books are important to me is a severe understatement.

Each author writes in the hope that someone will connect with our work. Sure, dillusions of grandure occassionally fill our heads early on (for some that may never go away), but the harsh reality of the publishing world quickly squashes (or at least humbles) that goal.

When I receive a review such as this one from Goodreads.com, I am filled with pride as I know this person was exactly who I wrote the Shadow Series for! Here's the review by Desert Rose:

"Every loner teen-age guy dreams of having super-powers, and being a hero. They daydream about that pretty girl who doesn't seem to ever take notice of them. They have one friend who's been there since Kindergarten. They hate their home life, and can't wait to turn 18 so they can get out on their own. They have a car that's an extension of themselves, that they love til the end, even if others spit at it. Sound familiar? Well, that's Test's life in a nutshell. Til now...

What do you do, when you suddenly have super-natural powers that seem pretty limitless? Apparently, in Test's world, you just try to fly under the radar and not cause trouble...after impressing the girl of your dreams, and your best friend, of course.

After some unfortunate accidents occur from his new powers, Test is thrown into a world of running, survival, and searching for answers. With the help of friends, both old and new, he sets out to figure out the secret behind his past, and try to figure out a future that doesn't include being a lab rat, or prison.

With good writing that flows well, this fast paced story keeps you on your toes until the last page, and leaves you wanting more. It is a story I think any guy can relate to, and any girl will enjoy. I'd recommend it to any YA fan."

This is a review that every author dreams of. It's better than a paycheck. It feeds my soul and desire to continue. Now, for the reverse...

Receiving negative reviews still stings, though a lot less than it did in the beginning. The thing that bothers me the most about bad reviews is that they are typically left by someone that seems to have been expecting the book to be something that it was never meant to be. It's also pretty obvious that they are not part of the target audience. When comments are made like "this seems like it was written for teens" or when it mentions "Twilight", it's obvious that they didn't read the synopsis or see what category the book was in. I'm not angry with them for leaving the bad review...I'm actually very sorry that they spent their hard earned money on my work.

The bottom line is that when an author puts themselves out there, they're going to get the gammet of reactions. Don't expect everyone to love your work. I'm floored when I look at the reviews for Of Mice and Men and see that it has negative reviews. (I do that sometimes BTW--look at the negative reviews of some of my favorite books. It helps me to keep things in perspective.)

Well, I'm running out of time. I have to get ready for church so I'll try to connect again later. Take care all!

I'm going to be getting it ready to send off to the beta readers this weekend and early next week.

In the mean time, I'm anxious to start working on my next project. This will be a Fae series for younger girls. I promised my daughter I'd write it last year. After working up the synopsis today, I'M CRAZY EXCITED ABOUT IT! It is going to be so much fun!

Stay tuned for updates about Axiom Theory as well as the new project!.http://www.blogger.com/profile/05490375813862431803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7691539480466193674.post-29132506859706401782014-01-06T11:36:00.002-08:002014-01-06T11:36:57.314-08:00Chills!Just wrapped up a text-to-speech editing session. I have to admit...I got chills. Very happy right now!.http://www.blogger.com/profile/05490375813862431803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7691539480466193674.post-3799876573839372872014-01-01T13:21:00.000-08:002014-01-01T13:21:08.074-08:00Rejuvinated and ready to own 2014!Happy New Year!

As the title states, I am pumped up about the new year. 2013 was a rough one on many levels. Professionally, I didn't dedicate myself as I should have and for that I apologize. I've taken too long to get Axiom Theory out to you. The last year has presented a lot of challenges and I don't think I handled them with the grace and skill that I could have. This year will be different. PERIOD.

You will be hearing much more from me here. I am going to re-engage and get back into the world of public relations and I'm going to start swimming in the social media waters once again. I unplugged for a while and, though I think it was necessary, it didn't help me professionally.

I’m not going to lie. When I started writing, I wrote for
myself. I needed it. It helped me. Something happened somewhere along the line
and that has changed. Now, not only do I continue to write for myself, but I
write for the readers as well.

I have enjoyed a moderate amount of success in the last three years and I owe it all
to you (the readers and fans). When I get a good review or rating on any site,
I’m not only proud, but I’m thrilled that I was able to give you something to
enjoy and to take your mind off of whatever might be causing you grief. The
flip side of that is getting bad reviews. While they don’t affect me like they
used to, I will admit that they do still sting. While I’m being honest, I will
also admit that, in the beginning, when I’d get a bad review, I took it personal.
In fact, the first bad review I received knocked me down so hard that I couldn't write for nearly two months. While that doesn't happen now, I do still question
myself at times. The biggest pain that I have when I receive a bad review is
that I feel like I've failed the reader. I don’t want anyone to spend their
hard earned money on my work and then find out they hate it. That sucks. That
is, in part, the reason I put Failing Test up for free permanently on Amazon
and on Kobo. It’s also why I dropped it down to $.99 on Barnes & Noble. If B&N
would let me put it to free, I’d do it right now.

I've had many fellow authors
and good friends share their thoughts on bad reviews with me and one in
particular stands out in my mind. To paraphrase, she says that “I don’t really
care about the bad reviews. I didn't write the book for them.” This is
something that I have to remember. I have way too many good reviews and
received too much fan mail to let myself think that I’m a hack. I’ll keep
writing for them.
